Hello again!
Today I have got a great grounding acupressure quickie to share with you. The point I'm going to cover is called Kidney 1 or K1. It just so happens to be the very lowest acupuncture point on the entire body, and so to find it you're going to need to kick off your shoes.
Once you're barefoot take a look at the bottom of your foot and look for the little dip or V-shaped indentation that's under the ball of your foot. You can see it's pretty obvious on this picture right here.
Another way to find it is to visualize the ball of your foot in two distinct parts. There's the circular pad under your big toe and the sideways oval-shaped pad that's under the other four toes. Kidney 1 is the meeting point of these two pads on the arch side of the foot.
This little dip is energetically about finding and fortifying your root energy. Which means that you can use it anytime you'd like to feel a little more grounded, a little more calm, or a little bit more stable.
It's perfect for before bed, especially if you tend to have insomnia issues or restless sleep. Or you can use it anytime you're worked up and kind of freaking out.
The downward anchoring energetics of Kidney 1 also make it really perfect for any situation where you want less going on up in your head, like when your jaw is clenched, or you've got TMJ issues, or any type of a headache. Think of this point as pulling energy down from your head so it can be more balanced and evenly distributed.
To stimulate Kidney 1, having a nubby little massage ball or something to roll your foot over is great. If you happen to have them you can also put these stretchy acupressure wristbands around your feet and line up that pressure bead with this point. For really deep pressure you could even walk around like this.
But keep in mind that this can be a pretty intense amount of stimulation. So it's especially good when you've got like a really bad headache, or I've used it when people are in labor and they're kind of freaking out and don't think they can keep going. But it might be more intense than it's worth for some situations. So definitely use your gut and your feedback as your guide.
Now the kidney is also appropriately enough associated with the water element in traditional Chinese medicine. So doing foot soaks with water can be a fabulous way to either warm or cool as your body needs, and stimulate Kidney 1 at the same time. Throw in a little Epsom salt if you've got particularly tired feet or add a little essential oil.
Maybe you might want to try something minty or more invigorating if you've got a headache, or something really calming like lavender if you're getting ready for bed. But remember, there is no magic one size fits all fit here. If I say mint for headaches but you know that that won't work for you, do something else.
The main idea is that however you choose to use Kidney 1 it should help you connect with the present moment, and take a break from future or past thinking, and spend some time giving yourself some intentional self-care.
Kick off your shoes, get a roller or a little foot soak going, or just sit on the side of your bed and spend a couple of minutes massaging away before you hit the hay.
If you'd like a mantra to go with this point you might want to try out something like, "I am grounded, I feel calm."
